This past week I went with my mentor to a career day presentation at a middle school. We got to talk about the perks of a job in urban forestry as well as answer questions. It provided me with a good opportunity to use some of my research in convincing students to pursue a job in a green industry. I made sure to emphasize the time spent outside and how it is not a typical desk job, which appeals to students who are such in a classroom all day. The very laid back nature of the work tends to resonate quite well with some students, and at the end my mentor even played a song on his banjo for the class.
As I have said earlier, one of the best ways to convince kids to join environmental fields is to get the word out and make them familiar for people looking for jobs and future careers. Talking at a career day was a great way to do so, and I see a lot of value in the various educational programs done by the Texas Trees Foundation.
Next week I am going to work more on my final product and hopefully find another task to work on while I continue my tedious wait for city approval.
