Blog Entry #28

Last Saturday I completed the Ramsey Avenue planting as well as the rest of the Neighborwoods planting in Oak Cliff. We had nearly one hundred volunteers show up despite cold weather and wind. Many residents also left their houses to help plant and water the trees. We planted a total of two hundred and fifty trees in Oak Cliff, all of which came from ten gallon pots.

What surprised me the most was the amount of support we received. We had a lot of repeat volunteers, but a lot were locals who wanted to help beautify their neighborhood. A lot of people also thanked us for our work and seemed very appreciative. I learned many things from the experience that I can use in future projects.

First, environmental projects should be sold as a beautifying project rather than attempt to promote biodiversity or other seemingly abstract concepts. People will be far more likely to support it.

Second, volunteers are enormously helpful. We planted two hundred and fifty trees in around three hours. Not only that, but people will be far more likely to maintain trees that they helped plant. Volunteering, I have noticed, is a social experience as much as it is a work experience. We had music, food, and t-shirts, and because of all of these, people had fun and will be far more likely to help again in the future.
